Mercedes 190 SL Barn Find.Feb 20, 2012
This is a documentation of a true barn find. The car is a 1959 Mercedes 190 SL Roadster. It was purchased from a 90 year old woman in NJ. The car had not been on the road since 1993 when her husband died. Using a clay cleaning system and 3 step polishing with an oribital polisher, I brought the cars finish back to life. I took about 200 photographs about ever 5 minutes, over 3 days. The total elapsed time was about 14 hours. I hope you enjoy whatching as much as I enjoyed bring the car back to life! Here's a nice 190sl just out of a long 20 year or so sleep in a garage. I made a few repairs and now everything on the car works great! It is fun little cabriolet to cruise around on a nice summer day! Enjoy the 1956 music track featuring "Bucket Head" by James Brown, "What Kind of Man Are You?" by Mary Ann Fisher (Ray Charles) and finally "Mess Around" by Ray Charles.

The Mercedes Benz 190 SL was put on sale at the 1954 New York International Auto show along side its big brother the 300 SL Gulwing, Although similar in their lines and grills the two share almost nothing, The 300 being the ultimate supercar of its time with a tubular space fame and the ability to reach 180 mph. The 190 was based on the sedan platform that encompassed 4 wheel independent suspension, the rear being a swing arm like the 300 but with out any performance tuning that made this design not for the faint of heart when driven at the limit. In its favor he 190 was a much nicer and comfortable car that could be daily driven. With a hot rod version of the 190 sedan 1.9 liter 4 cylinder engine it was not very powerful at 110 hp. It was available with an optional hard top that did keep the insides dry and comfy. The 190 looked like bargain next to the $8000 300 SL but it was a bit pricey at about $3000, Since it was based on the 190 sedan it was not much of a sports car. Mercedes marketed as a two seat touring car.
